Succession at the Top: Where Talent Meets Compensation

An organization's executive compensation strategy sits at the heart of every executive transition. As the CEO succession process unfolds, decisions about compensation directly shape who is ready to lead, how talent is retained through uncertainty, and whether the organization can move forward with confidence. This session positions total rewards professionals as central players in that process, not just supporting it.

From there, we will connect compensation to the broader picture of talent, succession, and development. We will share research on executive transitions within the energy sector and explore how boards navigate CEO succession, including the evolving relationship between the Board Chair and CEO during periods of change. You will see how the formal responsibilities of succession planning, along with the interpersonal dynamics that influence outcomes, link back to the compensation decisions you help drive.

    Key takeaways:

    • Practical tools and analytics you can apply in your organization, including benchmarking against potential versus current roles, talent vulnerability, and pay-for-performance.
    • A clearer view of how compensation strategy supports succession readiness and development planning.
    • Insight into the board's role in planned and unexpected transitions, and where compensation fits in.
